The Halifax Burlesque Society has disbanded! After a great run, we have decided to call it quits under the name of HBS. Many of our original performers have moved away, the feel and spirit of our shows have changed, and Burlesque itself is changing. Burlesque in Halifax will continue under different names, but HBS as we know it is no more.

Many of our performers are still up and at it, so check out our Performers page on the website for a list of bawdy burlesquers.

Our favorite DJ/Performer/Sound Expert, DJ Juggs gets the party started and keeps it going all night.

Naughty Noony
As Naughty as she is Noony, this foxy lady is the organizational force behind post-Jinx HBS, as well as an adorable (as a fuzzy lamb) and wild (a naughty wolf) performer. She also does a mean "Madison".

Wanda McOut
Wanda McOut is known to send jaws dropping when she coyly asks, "wanna make out? Whether she's playing a raunchy air guitar and channeling Joan Jett with PSCM or riding the luckiest lowrider bicycle in town, Wanda will get your motor revving.

Tommy and Bebe Gunn
Bad girls Tommy and Bebe do the best Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan act this Country had ever seen, known to send the audience into pants-pissing laughter. Multitalented and endlessly clever, look out for these two!

Miss Strawberry Delight
Miss Strawberry Delight is a pint sized fireball of sweet creamy goodness. We first saw her defiling Shirley Temple's "Lollipop" and more recently tearing off her expertly made rhinestone jumpsuit to Elvis's "All Shook Up".

Roach
There is not much one can say about Roach. Who else can play a dominatrix-esque Miss Canada while wearing a strap-on, and then go home and cook us the best damn bannana loaf we've ever tasted?

Indie Backseat
Possibly the cleverest stage name and cutest sometimes-drag king in the whole HBS. Indie thows the audience into hysterics with the romance of prepubescent boys set to "I think we're alone now", a sexy office romp, or a stripteasing, booty-shaking doo-wop band.

phil i hope i can call you a sometimes drag king. i thought calling you the cutest tomboy would be un-PC of me. but you are cute though. ;)

The Bagtown Fringe Festival (Sackville, NB) is once again seeking Burlesque
performers for August 18-21. Anyone interested in performing, please contact
bagtownfringe@hotmail.com. Last year's show was a real highlight for the
festival, and performers had a lot of fun and even received a standing ovation!

Sorry for the long entry but i really think its
important for your input on this, please read it!

I am continuing to update the website (

think its an important archive of our shows and our
philosophy and I am happy to keep it up.

I'd love to have other peoples photos of the past
shows to complete the "Past Shows" page, for now
they're mostly my shots. I don't have any photos (or a
file of the poster, and I need the info on the
charities) for TeleTease, so if you have some good
ones send them along and I'll put them up.
(I also don't have any of our girl guide act from
Bever Fever if anyone has some!)

If any of you with blogs or other sites would like
them linked on the "Links" page, let me know, that
might be cool.

I am trying to complete the "Performers" page (

Also the little write ups were just a quick fix to
have something there, If you'd rather write your own
blurb thats totally fine by me! (in third person for
contintuity). I can also leave the one I wrote if you
like it, or edit it a little. Here's what i have so

Jinx Jezebelle
Founder and Artistic director of The Halifax Burlesque
Society, Jinx is a talented performer, costumer, and
organizer! Her style ranges from classic solo teases
to raunchy and hilarious acts where everyone involved
ends up covered in milkshake or even timbits.

Pussy DeVille
Pussy Deville is a belly dancer and burlesquer
extrordinaire. She has been with HBS since the
beginning, both as performer and photographer. She is
also the webmistress of this site, so she gets to
write nice things about herself. Incidentally, she is
a genius, and lovelier than Helen of Troy.

Hugo
Euro-pop sensation Hugo have exploded at two HBS
shows, leaving the audience in a maddened frenzy.
Members \ Hugo and The Tooth sing their songs in
German, French, and...?

Miss Conduct
Miss Conduct proves that sporty can be sexy, funny,
and very clever. From football themed strip-teases to
a steamy and hilarious monologue about hockey, she is
a truly original performer. As a women of many talents
Miss Conduct also performes with "The Stolen Minks",
winner of the Coasts "Best New Local Artist" award.

Tia Timebomb
One hot mama, Tia Time-Bomb is a bomb waiting to go
off! Her acts include Tit Hortons and Milkshake with
Jinx, to attacking a birthday cake in her snowsuit.

Chainsaw Lover
Chainsaw can never be described in words...from a sexy
and possible insane secretary to a bondage loving
angel to a little old lady, her acts are both
hilarious, clever and Foxy.

LeNoir
LeNoir, our political and sex-crazed maniac goes from
humiliting a sock-stuffed George Bush, to being a
safe-sex super hero to writhing on a rotating bed
wearing a sparkly strap-on and dancing to Peaches.
Recently returned from touring the USA with the Fluff
girls, don't expect to sleep through this act.

Kitty Le Coque
Specializing in Belly dance, Circus arts and dark
seduction, Kitty is a drop-dead gorgeous and talented
performer. Often dancing with Pussy Deville as Kali's
Courtesans, she has also blown us away with a double
trapeze act, the contortioning Pony Girls and a pirate
themed stip-tease.

The Cherry Bomb Squad
What can you say about a bunch of wild and
out-of-control women bouncing on excersise balls,
jumping on trampolines and getting in trouble all over
the continent? These gals are always a favorite,
especially at the polaroid booth.

Lydia Leech
A classic burlesque style strip-teaser, Lydia thrills
with her shower act, a tease to Hava Nagila,
contorting with the Pony Girls or a straight-up down-
and-dirty strip.

PSCM!!!!!!
The wildest, hottest, nastiest air band around, PSCM
has been spotted playing at the Seahorse, Club Vortex
and other local venues, while not singing a note or
playing one instrument. Their acts have been known to
get completely out of control to the point where
intervention has been necesary. Whether rocking out to
Milli Vanilli, Electric Six, The Scissor Sisters or
NKOTB, this band will knock you out.

We're Disbanding!
Its been a long time between updates at the HBS blog, and a long time since we've done anything in the Halifax scene! Well there's good news and bad news folks, There will be another show, but it will be our last. :(

Halifax Burlesque Society has officially decided to disband, for a variety of reasons. Its a lot of work with not much thanks running the society, and there really isn't anyone willing to take the reins. Most of our original members have moved away, and our shows are becoming very different from our original intentions. Burlesque itself is changing, becoming more mainstream and trendy. We've decided to quit while we're ahead.

But in true Burly Burlesquer style, we will not go quietly! Our final party will be a bash to remember. We have taken over the Marquee Club for August 6 for a Best of Burlesque show!
All your favorite acts plus a few new suprises are in store. And this will really be our LAST SHOW under the name HBS so DONT MISS THIS ONE!

My name is Amanda Rafuse, and I am currently a fourth year anthropology student at Dalhousie University, Halifax NS. I am completing my thesis on the neo-burlesque movement of North America, the focus of my paper has shifted to the pastie. I am examining the function and symbolism of the pastie as a cultural artefact. I know that your group produces their own pasties, and hold pastie-making circles. If you are holding such an event prior to April 7, 2005, I would be interested in attending in order to participate and observe. If you are not holding such an event, I would also be interested in interviewing members who have participated in these activities before.

In other news, thought you all might be interested to know that although our show at the Pride Day performance seemed to be very well recieved, I recieved this email:

"Hi Laura,

I'm writing to you with regards to the Burlesque performance at Sackville Landing on Sat., July 17th. On July 8th I met with a few of the burlesque performers who were going to be a part of the lineup and discussed the audience who would be receiving the show. I was clear on the necessity for PG 13/15 content, as there would be children in attendance at the show.
Unfortunately I had to leave the waterfront prior to the performance, but was quickly informed that the content was in fact 18+. It was my hope that there would have been notice taken by your organization to the dozens of children who were lined up in front of the stage to watch the show. I have since learned that many parents chose to pull their children from the stage and many people left as they were not expecting the shock value that you provided.
I've always been a supporter of the Halifax Burlesque Society and will continue to do so. There is a place and time for this type of performance, but certainly not at a waterfront show in front of children. It is my responsibility to answer to the families and individuals who were shaken by the performance, and in tern, need to appologize to them. I am asking to receive words of appology that I can use on your behalf in order to rectify the situation.

Our response to this was:

"Jay,
It is unfortunate that people were upset by our performance. We did not intend to offend anyone. However, it is not our responsibility as performers to screen or direct the acts, that is up to the pride committee.
We assumed that Pride Day was an appropriate venue for a bit of sexuality. Pride Day is about sexual preference, and therefore, sex. There were men in leather g-strings, and drag queens in skimpy outfits. In Toronto and Montreal, Pride Day parades often feature full nudity and explicit sexuality.
We were asked to do a burlesque act. People (on the committee) who have seen our shows know that they involve a bit of raunch. We were told to put together a PG 15 act, and we did mention that pasties and strap-ons would be a part of the number at that point. We played our music and talked through the number with one of the Pride committee representatives (you).
In our opinion, our act was appropriate for the afore mentioned age group. Teenagers deal with sexuality on a regular basis, both on TV and in their lives, and we see our fun and gender bending act as a positive thing. However, 15 year olds are not children, and there were children at the performance. This is not something we had not counted on, based on the information we had been given. We were unable to change our act at the last minute, nor would we have wanted to. It is in our nature as burlesquers to challenge. We assumed that parents knew a PG 15 Pride Day show would have elements of sexuality, and we cannot be responsible for where they choose to bring their children. Child care facilities were available, and concerned parents had this as an option. If this kind of thing was a concern for the committee, maybe there should have been an actual rehearsal so the committee could further approve of the acts, or so they could choose to announce a warning before our act.
We were very pleased to be asked to perform at this event, and we hope to be involved with Pride Day in the future. So we are sorry that people left the performance offended, we were just going on the information we had been given, and our own assumptions about the nature of Pride Day.
In the future, it would be best to let us know if you'd like a performance appropriate for children, and specific guidelines would be helpful.
It is possible for us to put on this type of (albiet less entertaining) act if necessary.
Thankfully, those offended appear to be in the minority. We had a very loud, enthusiastic response from the audience, and many people told us it was their favorite act in the show!

The Burlesque Society has been invited to meet with the North End
Women's Group on Wednesday morning at 10:15am - noon (approximately)
on
August 4th at the North Branch Library at 2285 Gottingen Street.

The Women's Group will celebrate its 25th Anniverary in September, and
has many original members who meet on a weekly basis for coffee and
conversation. The Group has had an instrumental role in starting
organizations in the community, and is composed of a really
open-minded,
dedicated and fun-loving bunch of ladies. They are really looking
forward to our visit!

The women have expressed an interest in seeing a few performances, so
if
you have a gentle, G-rated act and could make the time on Wednesday
morning to bring your music and costume, it would be rad. With
permission, I thought that we could screen clips of past shows, and
use
some $$ from the pot to make pasties with the women. We could briefly
explain how we self-started and our reasons for doing shows. If you
are

1-meting on thursday for those who would like to go to the sackville fringe fest. 6:30 at howard space( the bus stop). bring your act, and music, old acts are great as we know what we will be dealing with.

2-pride weekend and parade. this saturday to march in the parade meet on maitland street behind club NRG at 12:30-1, the parade starts at 1:30, some dressed up and with noise makers. a waterfront show will start at 3:30, and 6 HBS memebers will be performing.

howdy all you fabulous burlesquers,
looks like the merch and pasties making party will be this coming
sunday, 7pm at howard's space (usual burlesque meeting place on
gottingen). we will be making pasties and t-shirts for selling at the
merch table. you will also be able to make pasties for yourself and
if you are helping out with merch-making, you will be able to silk
screen your shirt (or have someone do it for you?).

what needs to be done:
-pasty making for merch table and for performers
-silk screening

what will be supplied:
-screening ink and pattern
-t-shirts for merch
-instructions/instructors for the how-to for both
-basic materials for pasties

what you need to bring:
-your own shirt (if you want one made)
-extra special bits for personalized pasties
-if you feel like it, you could bring snacks for yourself and others

this week we will be meeting at st antonio's for practice at 6:30. i think that most of you know where the venue is, but if not the address if 2304 hunter street on the corner of cunnard near windsor st and across the street from music stop.

we definitally have the venue, as i managed to get a contract singed and deposit made

at the meeting adrienne is going to making the glam vidoes of performers to project on the wall at the show, so if you have some of your costume ready, or aspects from another, or a whole other outfit all together then you should be ready to pose for the camera at the meeting.

-a list of clothing items that people need for the show have been posted on the bloig site in the comments box

-also if your group need things, like the decorating commitee who needs canadian garments for the cloths line, or merch who need t-shirt and to tell us the time of the merch making party, then you can email this adress and i will forward them to everyone involved int hs show.

-also canada day marching band 3pm at the public gardens.

-and lastly we need to get posters and handbills out there, so if you took some at the meeting please put them up and out around town. publicity publicty publicity.

hi

tonite (thursday) a last minute visit to the venue is happening before the meeting. We are meeting at san antonios at 5pm to see what it all looks like. those of you who are available should come, especailly people in the decorating committe and tose who are involved in anything that revolves around the stage setup, like stage managment, lights etc..

Also for tonites meeting please bring a copy of your music to give to the music collector (cristina and esten). This is a reahaersal so all acts should be getting up on stage and showing (not telling) us what you have so far.

we will start the meeting with committe meetings so please be on time sot hat your group is not waiting toolong on you.

ALSO tickets go on sale today! they are $7 in advance and available at Venus Envy, Uncommom grounds and no records. tickets will be available for participants to buy at the meeting.

hi everyone,
> i've sent you (via email) the list that we have of phone numbers, emails and what committe and task people are in/have signed up for. There are some positions that need to be filled which are highlighted, and some people who have not yet signed up. we also have a few blanks on the sheets for some more information from people (ie phone numbers and email) ideally these can all be fillled at the meeting this week on thursday at 6:30 pm, and then will be updated. once we have everything figured out and filled out we can make hard copies for the binders and participants. We will also meet this week as committes and startworking on the tasks at hand, ideas and discussion.
> if people can start to bring in their music so that we can start seeing what we have for our show that would be great as we only have 4 meeting until the show, including this week comming up.
> WE STILL NEED a music -you can see what the task description is at the meeting on thursday. meeting tomorrow thursday may 27th at 2203 gottingen at 6:30 pm. submission forms will be given out tat that point and accepted on a first come first served basis at the next weeks meeting. tommorrow;s meeting is going to be fun, with pictures from the last shows, and maybe some treats if we all bring some. also we would like to find a theme so that people can think about it for their acts before submissions are due. hope to see you there!

also tonight may 26th at the seahorse on argyle street there is a fund raiser for the cherry bomb squad to raise $ to get to the burlesque goes north festival in toronto later this month. it starts at 10pm and will include PSCM, jay the face melanson, d juggs , jhonny benson, special guests and of course the cherry bomb squad. $5.come out and support these ladies

and, on saturday may 29th the vimy legion has extended an invitation to the society to participate in thier celebrate their lives day. the fundraising event starts at 11am, and goes through to the night. beer will be served at $1.40-1.80 changing each hour. kareoke starts at 7:30 pm. lots of prizes too! they would love to see anyone from the society at the legion.

Hi!

Last night's meeting was great! the manifesto is now revised and reworked. make sure to check yr email (after saturday) for minutes from yesterdays meeting. If you're not receiving the emails, many have been coming back, so you may want to get in touch with Jinx or email (yr active account)halifaxburlesquesociety@2die4.com.

There will be a meeting on MONDAY, MAY 3rd at 6:30PM at UTILITY. Spread the word! the reason for this extra meeting is to discuss the structure of the society (i.e. distribution of responsibility, members, committees, directors). As suggested at the end of the last meeting, everyone is encouraged to bring ideas (on paper or in mind) of their view of how the society should be structured for the upcomming show.

thank you to all the people who attanded the meting last night at the legion, i think that some excellent points were brought up. one thing that we decided for sure was that we need more disscussion, to come up with an outcome for each particular issue. we decided on weekly meetings, at 7pm, on thursadays (sorry laura). the meeting place is yet to be decided, and will be posted once we know. the idea is that each meeting will have one issue that we will discuss and come up with solutions to, so by the time we get to the next show we will really be ready to deal with every thing. so if anyone has issues they think we could devote a meeting to feel free to post it. some ideas are: the manifesto, who we are as a society, the size of the show, communication, and structure of responsability.

thanks for a good meeting, i think that having the opportunity for feedback went really well. tickets should now be in the stores so you can direct your friends and famliy to them for tickets, as most of you know you should reccomend that they do it sooner rather than later as they will sell out.

does anyone have access to some rolling racks that we can borrow for the evenings? that would be really helpfull backstage.

GLAM-SHOTS-!!!!

The GLAM SHOTS are scheduled for this week at the following times.

March 17, Wednesday from 9am to 11:30am
March 19, Friday from 5:30pm to 8:30pm

The glamshots will take place at the photo/lighting studio at NSCAD. Enter through the Duke St. entrance. Take elevator to 3rd floor. Turn left. Turn left again. Turn right, door straight ahead slightly to the right labelled smally "lighting studio" (directions curtesy of jinx)

The TICKLE TRUNK will be started at the next meeting. Remember to bring any costumes or clothing that you would be willing to lend of give away to help others make their costume.

Here's the deal.

The zine is tall and skinny. Take a reguar sized paper and fold it in half--the tall and skinny.

YOU MUST MAKE YOUR PAGES TO FIT.
Pictures: This is very important. WE NEED PICTURES! bURLESQUE PICTURES PIRATE PICTURES. You can pass in your articles with pictures added. Bring pictures to the meeting on Monday so we can all look at them.
Font: The zine needs to be easy to read. You can all use different fonts if you like (nothing too scripty or fancy looking though). We want people to read it. Nothing sideways and don't put words over pictures.
14 point font
Articles are due March 11. The latest March 15. We need time to do layout, photocopies, staple and the fancy wax seal.

Anyone who is writing an article and has approached Erin or Claudette about it the deadline is March 11th, March 15th latest. The format for the zine is going to be a regular (not legal) sized paper folded length-wise, so it's long. Please submit articles typed according to this format ie. a column down the left side of the page and one down the right. If you would like to write something, and have not already said so, let us know.

a couple of emails have reached the email acount, which i wanted to pass along. first is from the exchange theater, a new company in town who are doing a cabaret fund raiser night on march 12th. they are looking for possibly 3 burlesque performers who could do numbers for thier show. it would be a great chance to get up on stage before the show for those of you would might want a trial run.

also looking for people is a film student at NSCC. they are shooting a 10 minute film and have a scene of a 1930's party. they need people for a photo shoot friday feb 27th (night time), and all day saturday the 28th.

to re-cap on the meeting last night, for those of you unable to make it:

next week thursday feb 19th is the last week for new performers to be part of this show. we already have a lot of acts, so we need to start paying attention to how long the running time will be. also you MUST attend meetings, unless you let me or another director know that you cannot make it. you can email us at

to let us know. if you do not attend meetings with out letting somebody know you will be cut from the line up.ok. but we still would love any new people to help out with stuff off the stage like in lights, security, decorating, door, and the list goes on.

the theme i belive has shifted slightly to piracy. we had a good disscussion about how we as a group felt about the theme. some of the things mentioned were how some felt uncomfortable with what it is that pirates stand for such as rape, theft , violence etc... also that the theme is not so original. and also a fair amount about how male centric pirates are. what we decided is that it is now our job to look furthur into these issues and use what we find in our show and the acts (if you wish to work with the title theme) to create and present an interesting and creative view on the subject.

we do not yet have a venue,so we still do not have dates for the show-but we are working on it

we talked a bit about the titile for the show which will be on the posters ie: big top burlesque. some of the suggestions were:island of dreams, treasure island, treasure chest, pleasure island, booty island, fantasy isalnd,bottoms up, tops down tits up. we will decide at the next meeting.

for the next meeting please bring your music, ideas, any choreography you may have to show us. also any info you may have on pirates,and piracy to share would be great.

1. We believe in creating our own cheap entertainment.
